The Mother Church of Paderne was built in the 16th century to serve the new settlement of Paderne, which moved from the interior of the castle walls to this new place. Its construction was almost finished in 1554, only missing, at that time, to complete the covering of the body of the church. At this time, this temple counted on 3 naves, 4 sections and a headboard formed by an ousia and two collateral chapels; was changed between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, when several side chapels were opened in the body of the church, destined for the confraternities that settled here in the 19th century, when a new section was added to the body, and a new facade was built in 1880, and in 1905, in which the bell tower underwent works of increase, and a clock was installed.
This church features a renaissance style with Manueline remains, which can be found in the capitals' stonework, on the roof of one of the chapels that make up the head, and in the triumphal arch. In the interior, there are several altarpieces, a chalice decorated with a flat spherical knot, of Renaissance trait, and several wooden sculptures of the XVII and XVIII centuries, emphasizing one, in Baroque style, that represents the Archangel Saint Miguel
Another of the riches of this church, is its sculptural booty, with copies of the century. XVII and XVIII, with special emphasis on the baroque image of the Archangel Michael.
The main period of decorative reformulation took place in the first half of the eighteenth century, coinciding with the reign of King João V. Between 1717 and 1734 the new altarpiece was erected and in 1735 two other confraternities hired the farense engraver Francisco Martins Xavier, for the realization of other pieces of retabulary. Some of these works, which could only be of superior quality given the statuette of the carver, have not reached our days and were sacrificed in the nineteenth century, when the current neoclassical altarpieces that adorn some chapels were made.
