Its name is due to the presence of mysterious and changing cavernous formations carved into the cliffs by marine erosion, formations that reach 8 meters in height in some sectors.

The transparency of the sea and its pleasant temperature make it a highly appreciated place for diving. The absolute maximum temperatures reach 41 ° C during the summer, with thermal averages of 30 ° C. Rainfall is very scarce and does not exceed 250 mm. yearly.

Due to its geographical latitude, it has a great summer luminosity, with approximately 12 hours of full sunlight.

The temperatures of its waters are the warmest on the maritime coastline, in some sectors reaching 27 ° C with an average of 24 ° C for the entire San Matías Gulf. The sea is also characterized by its intense blue color and by its transparency and high concentration of salts and iodine, factors that give it a high hypertonic value, especially for children and the elderly. The beach, in the area of ​​influence and services of the spa, stretches for about 3 km and a maximum width of 1 km at low tide, with a gentle slope of less than 1%, oscillating the tides between 8 and 10 meters with respect to the depth of the waters.

The bay is an optimal site for practicing water sports such as jet-skiing, water skiing, windsurfing and diving. Underwater baptisms are performed for the newly initiated.

Coast and boat fishing, adventure tourism, bird watching, cultural circuits and environmental interpretation activities are some of the alternatives offered by the seaside resort to fully enjoy.

Only during the month of January the spa receives more than 150,000 tourists. This contrasts with the number of stable population in the town, which barely exceeds 3,500 inhabitants.
