Construido por los arquitectos de Viena Helmer y Fellner, cuyas obras se pueden admirar en diversas ciudades de Europa Central, este edificio renacentista fue construido entre los años 1886 y 1887.
En respuesta a la apertura del Teatro Nacional, esta ópera fue financiada por la comunidad alemana de Praga e inaugurada con una obra de Wagner en 1888. Su amplio auditorio y sus adornos neo-rococó vieron pasar famosos personajes que van desde Gustav Mahler a Richard Strauss.
Programación: Esencialmente óperas italianas (El Baile de Mascaras, Nabucco y las Vísperas Sicilianas de Verdi y La Tosca de Puccini). Además, cabe mencionar una óptima adaptación del ballet Mi Patria de Smetana.
